Is Klean Kanteen really carbon neutral?

We still have an impact on our environment. We are happy to admit this. But we strive to reduce this impact.

We believe that every company is responsible for the carbon emissions they emit. As a Climate Neutral Certified Brand, we measure our footprint annually. We reduce our footprint as much as possible. And we compensate for the remaining emissions by purchasing certified offsets.

This is the basis of all decisions we make: from product design to logistics. It is certainly not the easiest way. But we do it because we believe that all companies must take responsibility.

We work with partners who guide us and set the bar high for us. In addition, we constantly challenge ourselves. Since 2022, we have been using certified recycled stainless steel. The result? 40% less greenhouse gas emissions.

What do you understand by Klean Design?

We help people use less single-use plastics. Our products are reusable, BPA-free alternatives to plastic water bottles, disposable cups and disposable straws. We also design all of our products to last a lifetime. We call this Klean Design.

With Climate Lock vacuum insulation, your Klean Kanteen performs optimally. Drinks stay cold for up to 145 hours and hot for up to 47 hours

Our products are food safe and BPA free . All product materials go through a strict qualification process with the aim of protecting human health and the environment and avoiding harmful chemicals.

We reduce our impact: Since 2022, we have been using certified recycled 18/8 stainless steel. This reduces our emissions by approximately 50%.

Is recycled steel as strong and safe as virgin steel?

Yes, stainless steel made from recycled materials is just as strong and durable as stainless steel made from virgin raw materials. Recycling stainless steel does not affect the quality or strength of the material, as the properties are retained during the recycling process.

This means that recycled stainless steel offers the same longevity, corrosion resistance and strength as new stainless steel. At Klean Kanteen, we value sustainability, and we use recycled stainless steel without compromising the quality and reliability of our products.

Is stainless steel harmful to health?

At Klean Kanteen, we care deeply about the safety of our products, and we can assure you that they are as safe as ever.

Our 90% post-consumer recycled 18/8 stainless steel meets the same stringent food contact regulatory requirements as the steel previously used in all of our products. We are certified by Intertek, an independent provider of recycled content verification. Do Klean Kanteen caps contain plastic?

Our goal is to make reusable products attractive for everyday use. That is why we offer caps made of safe polypropylene (PP#5), free of BPA. These caps are lightweight, smooth and quiet in use and meet the highest standards of quality, durability and design.

The Wide Loop and TKWide Loop caps have a PP#5 coating on the outside, but a fully stainless steel interior, so the contents of your drinks never come into contact with plastic.

We also offer a variety of high-quality, stainless steel cap options for our Classic line, including the Bamboo Cap and our Steel Loop Cap.

Where are the products made?

Klean Kanteen products are designed in Chico, California and responsibly made in China. Currently, there are no qualified stainless steel water bottle manufacturers in the U.S. or Europe - most brands are made in China or India. We are proud of our long-standing relationships with these factories and their employees, and consider them part of our Klean Kanteen family.

The manufacturers are specifically located in the cities of Guangzhou (Guangdong province), Yongkang and Pinghu (Zhejiang province). Over the years, we have investigated the possibility of producing locally. Unfortunately, due to steel prices and the cost of domestic production, we would not be able to offer competitive prices to our retailers and consumers. This would not be in line with our mission to provide accessible and reusable solutions to reduce disposable products.

We work with our suppliers to adhere to codes of conduct, undergo third-party social and environmental assessments, conduct regular facility visits, and test materials and product safety.

What is Klean Coat?

Klean Coat is a specialty coating used on certain Klean Kanteen products, such as water bottles. It is a durable, hard-wearing, non-toxic finish designed to extend the life of the product while reducing its impact on the environment.

Klean Coat helps make the bottle more resistant to scratches, stains and discoloration, keeping it looking newer for longer. Additionally, Klean Coat is free of harmful chemicals like PFAS and PFOA, making it safe to use.

What is the difference between stainless steel and aluminum?

We strive to design functional, safe and versatile products that will last a lifetime. All of our products are made from food-grade, BPA-free 18/8 stainless steel that is non-toxic and will not absorb or retain flavors. We also make sure that all of our Klean products have rounded corners, making them easy to clean and not trapping debris or particles.

Aluminum bottles require an interior lining to prevent the metal from coming into contact with the contents and making them unsafe to eat. The most common lining materials used for aluminum bottles are plastic resins or baked-on epoxy, which are known to release BPA and other harmful chemicals. Additionally, these linings can scratch, exposing the aluminum underneath. Ceramic is also used as a lining material for aluminum bottles, but it is stiffer and can crack. These linings can also trap flavors, which can cause unwanted tastes, residues, and odors.

We believe that stainless steel is the healthiest, safest, most durable and versatile material for our products.

What is 18/8 stainless steel?

Klean Kanteen products are made of high-quality 18/8 food-safe stainless steel. The numbers 18 and 8 represent the percentage of chromium and nickel in the steel. Chromium increases the hardness of the metal and nickel provides strength. Together, they make stainless steel highly resistant to stains and rust.

Stainless steel is easy to maintain, durable, inert and hygienic. It is therefore the material of choice in the food industry, dairy industry and the beer and wine industry.

Do Klean Kanteens contain BPA, lead, phthalates or heavy metals?

No way! Klean Kanteen stands for health and wellness and always has. Our products are designed to be a safe and healthy solution to single-use plastics. All Klean products are free of these elements and meet strict compliance standards around the world.

Can I use my Klean Kanteen for all drinks?

Yes, you can use a Klean Kanteen for all types of beverages. The Klean Kanteen is designed to be safe and durable, and is made of high-quality food-safe stainless steel.

This means you can use it for water, juice, coffee, tea, soda, and other beverages of your choice. The stainless steel doesn’t impart flavors or retain odors, so you can enjoy a fresh taste every time. It’s important to clean the Klean Kanteen well between uses, so you can always enjoy a clean drinking experience.

Be careful with carbonated or fermented drinks. These can create high pressure in the bottle and this can possibly cause leakage or affect the seal.

Is it possible to personalize drinking bottles?

We can personalize drinking bottles from 96 pieces. There are many possibilities: we can digitally print or laser engrave the bottles. Be sure to contact us to see the possibilities.

Maintenance and Warranty

My (sports) cap is leaking. Why is this?

Our sports caps are designed to be spill-proof. The air valve on the top makes it easy to drink. The downside is that sometimes some water can drip out. So they are not leak-proof.

But of course the contents should not flow out. Is this the case? Then you can check whether the air valve and the silicone ring on the thread are still in place. In addition, it is also important to always press the drinking spout down properly.

My TKWide Café Cap or Twistcap is leaking. Why is this?

The TKWide Café Cap and Twist Cap are designed to be watertight. If the bottle leaks, this can have several causes:

  1. Cap is not fully tightened : Check that the cap is securely and correctly tightened onto the bottle. Sometimes a little bit of slack can cause leakage, especially with hot drinks that build up pressure.

  2. Rubber sealing ring missing or worn : The sealing ring ensures a watertight seal. Check that it is present and not damaged or worn. If the sealing ring is missing or worn, you can replace it.

  3. Incorrect Assembly : For some caps, such as the Café Cap, it may help to take the parts apart and reassemble them correctly. Refer to the manual for specific instructions on cleaning and properly assembling the cap on our Maintenance & Tips page .

  4. Carbonated beverages : The TKWide Café Cap and Twistcap are not designed for carbonated beverages. When using these beverages, pressure can build up, which can cause leakage. In this case, use a cap that is more resistant to carbonated beverage pressure.

My Klean Kanteen doesn’t smell fresh. What can I do?

To remove any lingering odors or flavors, soak your Kanteen and cap overnight in hot water with baking soda or white vinegar. After soaking, it is important to scrub the parts thoroughly with a scouring pad. If necessary, you can use bottle brushes or straw brushes.

We do not recommend soaking the bamboo cap, but you can remove the silicone seal and soak it if necessary. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to replace the silicone seal as it can trap odors and flavors.

The paint on my water bottle is peeling. How do I fix this?

Klean Kanteen water bottles are often taken on adventures, and while they have a very durable coating, it is possible that the paint on your Klean Kanteen will show some minor wear over time or with heavy use. Klean Kanteen bottles are coated with a durable Klean Coat™, an environmentally friendly powder coating that is specifically designed for longevity. Here are some tips and solutions:

    1. Avoid abrasive surfaces : Contact with hard or abrasive surfaces can cause the coating to wear off more quickly. Try to place your bottle on soft surfaces to prevent scratches.

    2. Hand Wash Recommended : While many Klean Kanteen bottles are dishwasher safe, hand washing can help keep your paint fresh longer. Hot temperatures and abrasive dishwasher tablets can damage the coating over time.

    3. Warranty Coverage : Klean Kanteen offers a warranty against manufacturing defects. If you suspect that the loss of paint is due to a manufacturing defect and not normal use, please contact customer service. They will determine if you are eligible for replacement or repair.

    Please note: Normal wear and tear of the coating from everyday use is generally not covered by our Strong-As-Steel warranty.

My sports cap is making a strange noise?

If your sports cap makes a squeaking sound, you can try to solve it by cleaning the cap. If that doesn't solve the problem, please contact service@kleankanteen.be . We will gladly send you a new cap.

The lid of my TKCanister is stuck. How do I get it off?

It is possible that the heat has created a vacuum and set the seal on the side of the canister, preventing the lid from unscrewing. To prevent this, we recommend waiting a few minutes before adding hot soup or food to the canister.

If the lid is stuck, you can place the canister in the freezer for a minute or two to allow the sides to shrink slightly and make the lid easier to release.

If this suggestion does not work, please contact our warranty department at service@kleankanteen.be. We will be happy to assist you and can provide a replacement product if necessary.

There is a dent in my bottle. Can I get it out?

Klean Kanteen products are made of very durable and sturdy 18/8 stainless steel. But they can be dented by a fall or an adventure. Nevertheless, you can safely continue to use your bottle even if it is dented.

If your bottle has been dropped and dented, chances are the dent is hollow. For non-insulated bottles, you can place a wooden kitchen spoon inside the bottle and gently tap the other end with a hammer to knock the dent out. Avoid using metal objects as they could end up in your Kanteen or even puncture the bottle. Be aware that repairing a dent in an insulated bottle may damage the vacuum insulation.

My bottle is making a rattling noise. How do I fix this?

Rattling in your Kanteen means that a small piece has come loose in the walls. You can continue to use your bottle; it is still safe. However, the vacuum insulation may fail. If you notice that the contents do not stay warm or cold, please contact our warranty department at service@kleankanteen.be.

My bottle has a lot of (rust) stains. How can I clean the bottle?

All Klean Kanteen products are made of 18/8 food-grade stainless steel, which is safe and durable. Discoloration can occur, especially from coffee and tea. Sometimes small metals can penetrate the bottle and cause rust stains. Hard water can also cause deposits.

To remove residue, soak the Kanteen overnight in hot water and baking soda or white vinegar. Scrub the interior with a bottle brush or scouring pad, and use alcohol or a citrus product for sticky residue.

My Café Cap is not draining properly.

To adjust the flow of your coffee pod, take the pod apart and clean it thoroughly (read maintenance and tips ). Tighten the wing nut just two clicks, then test the flow. Loosen the nut to increase the flow or tighten the nut to decrease the flow. If you continue to have problems, please contact us.

Can my Klean Kanteen go in the dishwasher?

Our Kanteens are dishwasher safe. If you have color coated or printed bottles, we recommend hand washing to maintain their shine. High heat in the dishwasher can reduce the shine over time. Regardless of the cleaning method, it is important to wash your Kanteen regularly with warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely before storing.

Most caps can be placed in the dishwasher on the top rack. If you wash the parts separately, it is helpful to place them in a basket. Many of our caps can be taken apart for a thorough cleaning, so we recommend washing them by hand regularly to reach all the small spaces and remove any residue. The bamboo cap should always be washed by hand.

My hot drink in my insulated bottle cools down quickly. Why is this?

There are quite a few factors that cause your hot drink to cool down faster than expected:

  1. Frequently opening and closing your water bottle will cause your bottle to cool down faster. Every time you open the bottle, warm air escapes, which can lead to a faster cooling of the contents. Try to limit the number of times you open your bottle to maintain the temperature for longer.
  2. The more liquid the bottle contains, the longer the temperature will be maintained. A half-full bottle can cool down faster because there is more air in the bottle, which affects the heat retention capacity. So if you drink from the bottle regularly during the day, the heat of the drink will decrease faster.
  3. Cap not tightened properly : Check that the cap is tightened completely and securely. A cap that does not close properly can cause heat loss.
  4. External temperatures : Extreme cold can affect the performance of the insulation.

In some cases, a defect in the double-walled vacuum insulation can cause heat loss. You can easily test this: if your bottle feels very warm on the outside after adding a hot drink, then there is a defect. Please contact us: a defective vacuum insulation is in most cases covered by the Strong-as-Steel guarantee.

Is my Klean Kanteen covered by warranty? Strong-as-steel guarantee!

We are very confident about the quality of our water bottles. That is why we offer a lifetime Strong-as-steel guarantee . With this guarantee, Klean Kanteen covers all manufacturing defects and material defects that may occur during normal use . Is there a problem with your product due to a defect or manufacturing error? Klean Kanteen will repair or replace the product free of charge.

However, the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, damage caused by dropping or improper use, such as exposure to extreme conditions or incorrect cleaning methods.

Ordering, shipping and returns

What payment methods are accepted?

We accept credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard. We also accept Bancontact and iDeal. Customers of KBC/CBC and Belfius can also pay with the bank's payment button.

Can I cancel or change my order?

We process and ship orders as quickly as possible. Once an order has been placed, in most cases we can no longer make changes. If you would like to make a change (such as changing a color), please contact us as soon as possible. We will then see what is possible. Once the order has been passed on to the warehouse, we can no longer cancel or change it.

When will my order be shipped?

We ship from Antwerp from Monday to Friday during office hours. Orders are usually shipped within 1 - 2 business days, but this may take longer during busy periods.

How can I return or exchange an item?

Did you buy your product via this website and are you not satisfied? Then you can return the product within 14 days. Within this period you can choose for a refund or exchange.

To process a return or exchange, please notify us via your account , via service@kleankanteen.be or via the contact form on this website. Always mention your order number.

Returned goods must be in perfect, unused condition and in the original packaging. You are responsible for returning the package yourself. Returns can be sent to the following address:

I received a defective or incorrect product. What should I do?

Did you receive your order and was the product defective? Or was a product missing from the box? Please contact us directly via service@kleankanteen.be or via the contact form . We will then get to work to find a solution as soon as possible.

Please note! Is your box damaged upon receipt? This may be due to transport. In this case, we recommend not to accept your order.

Which shipping methods can I choose?

We ship with DPD. You can choose between DPD Home and DPD Shop. You can track your package via the DPD website and your package number that you received via email. For shipping to Belgium and the Netherlands we count 1 - 2 working days from collection by DPD. Shipping to France takes 2 - 3 working days from collection by DPD.

DPD Home: With DPD Home we deliver your order to your home. Are you not at home at the time of delivery? Then DPD will offer the package to a neighbor or a nearby DPD Parcelshop. The DPD driver will leave a message in your mailbox stating the address of the Pickup parcelshop and the time from which you can collect the package. You will have 7 days to collect it, after which it will be sent back to us.

DPD Shop: A Pickup parcelshop is a location for sending and collecting parcels. When you choose a delivery in a Pickup parcelshop, you choose the certainty of being able to collect your parcel when it suits you thanks to the flexible opening hours. From the moment the parcel is delivered to the Pickup Parcelshop, you will receive a message by e-mail or text message. In this message you will find the address details and opening hours of the Pickup parcelshop.

How much are my shipping costs?

We charge a shipping fee depending on the shipping method chosen. Do you want your package delivered to your home ? Then you pay 5.95 euros . For a delivery to a Pickup Parcelshop you pay 4.95 euros . Shipping to a Pickup Parcelshop is free from 40 euros .

In which countries is delivery possible?

Delivery is only possible in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France. Do you want delivery in another country? Then you can go to kleankanteen.com. Here we refer you to your local Klean Kanteen webshop.

I have not received my package? Something went wrong with the delivery?

You can easily check the status of your parcel via the DPD website using the parcel number or reference number.

Is your package marked as delivered but you have not received anything? Or is the package taking longer to arrive than expected? Then check if you can find a not-at-home note in your mailbox. This will state the collection point or the neighbor where the driver may have delivered the package.
